First I'd like to heart technology. Retro is great in music but not in how it's heard. I remember listening to that wonderful music of the 50's and 60's on staticcy (made up my own word) car and transistor radios. Trying to find the station on a dial so small that if your finger twitched you missed the signal. Buttons that never got the signal dead on. Scratchy records even when listened to the first time. I knew a kid in school who's uncle worked for WHK. He said the station got specially made records that had no scratches. The stations got them for free but consumers could not get them, had to pay for inferior product. Cassettes were a dream. Actually listen to songs in an order you could choose, and pick the songs. Not have to listen for an hour for the two songs you liked in between 3 0r 4 crap songs in a row. Of course back then the dj's actually had personality and it was so much fun listening to them it was easy to ignore the crap songs. If cassettes were a dream cd's were heaven. You didn't realize all the hiss until it was gone. And wonder of wonders, random or shuffle play. You could be surprised by what song was next and it was always a great one. Finally mp3. Being able to listen to over 6 hours of songs without a repeat. The quality is slightly less than cd but to be able to use a player the size and weight of a deck of cards is worth the trade off. I'll post another time on TV, satellite radio, and the internet, but for now I've got to make that list of my favorite songs.

Some thoughts

Sitting here on a snowy superbowl sunday I was reminiscing about listening to the radio when I was a kid. I googled and found a museum of radio history was just opened here in Cleveland. They have video on youtube that shows pictures and sound clips from the 60's that bring back memories. I feel like i've stepped into a time machine listening to WHK,KYW, WIXY, the elevator music stations. What are your radio memories? The interesting thing in the late 60's was that CKLW from Windsor, Ontario became the second most listened to station in Cleveland. One summer the newscaster said that it was hotter than hell in Detroit. It was 101 in Detroit and only 100 in Hell, Michigan. My favorite DJ's were Scot Burton, Johnny Walters, Johnny Holiday, and Len Anthony. I'll do another post and put in my favorite songs, mostly from then but some from now. Hope your favorite team wins the superbowl but since I'm from Cleveland I've got to root for the Cardinals. Catch you later. :)
